Imagine a world where everyone feels they have the power to make a real difference to society. What if charities had all the money, time and people they need to carry out their excellent work?
The Government’s idea of a Big Society (www.thebigsociety.co.uk) is big news. Whilst it still remains to be seen what this will mean for charities, it’s exciting to think that good causes have been singled out in this way, and recognised as having a real value across Britain. With the power of Government behind them, it’s possible for charities to continue to do amazing things.
Volunteers too will have their share of the spotlight, with European Year of the Volunteer due to take place in 2011. This goes some way to give all those who have given up their time free of charge to help charities, particularly those who have gone out of their way to raise much needed money for charities.
One democratic way for Government to ensure that charities good work continues is to protect Gift Aid. As a method of giving to charity tax-effectively, Gift Aid is absolutely key, allowing charities to be able to claim back the tax paid on a donation – currently worth 25p in the £1.
The Institute of Fundraising is currently in talks with Government to try and make the relief even simpler for charities to reclaim, as well as to ensure that it maintains its full value after April 2011. Find out more about the Institute’s campaign.
