The Deloitte and Sailors' Society Cycle 2008

The Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle 2008 is an opportunity for the region’s professionals and families to support the Sailors’ Society by enjoying a leisurely Sunday pedal through the maritime city of Southampton and Hampshire countryside. Money raised from this charity event will directly fund welfare projects to improve the lives of seafarers and their families around the world.

There is a choice of three circular routes along cycle paths and main roads - 10, 25 or 45 miles. All ages and abilities from complete beginners to experienced enthusiasts are welcome. So whether cycling individually or as part of a corporate team, there is a fun challenge for everyone!

All three routes will be clearly signed and marshalled with water-stops en-route. The cycle ride will start and finish on the waterfront at Mayflower Park, where there will be food, a licensed bar and family entertainment throughout the day.

Every cyclist who raises over £50 will also be entered into a prize draw to win a holiday for six courtesy of Hoburnes Holidays!

To take part, contact the Sailors’ Society to register your team. The deadline for advance entries is 31 March 2009, or you can enter on the day.

WaterAid : Big National Ceilidh

On Saturday 18th October, thousands of people will be taking part in ceilidhs up and down the country in aid of charity WaterAid.

The Big National Ceilidh is the brainchild of volunteers David and Joey Oliver who are both involved with the folk music scene.

A ceilidh is a type of barn dance, with a live band. It’s a great social occasion that anyone can join in with. To unify all the ceilidhs, at 10pm everyone will be dancing the Circassian Circle – one of the simplest, best-loved and most inclusive of dances - to the tune of “Jamie Allen”.

WaterAid is a charity that works in 17 countries throughout Africa, Asia and the Pacific Region, helping some of the world’s poorest people gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. To date, WaterAid has helped over 11 million people gain access to these services.

For more information, or to arrange your own ceilidh, visit www.bignationalceilidh.co.uk or call Sarina Jesudason on 020 7793 4563

Sue Ryder Care : Art Liberating Lives

People nationwide are being urged to get their artistic juices flowing to the theme of Liberation to support Sue Ryder Care’s Art Liberating Lives event, which is entering its fourth year.

Art Liberating Lives reflects the importance of art as therapy in Sue Ryder Care’s six hospices and eight neurological care centres.

Whether your art is amateur or professional, residents and patients at the charity’s care centres, as well as members of the public, are being encouraged to create pieces of artwork in all manner of mediums for display at an exclusive exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London in December.

You can also submit your entry for the Mall Galleries through our website: www.suerydercare.org – it costs £12.50 to enter and if your piece is selected as one of the 350 to be exhibited, and it is sold during the exhibition, then 45% (including VAT & commission) of the sale will go towards Sue Ryder Care’s vital work, and 55% will go to the artist.

Sue Ryder Care is also urging any volunteer fundraisers keen to support this year’s Art Liberating Lives exhibition at the Mall Galleries (11 – 18 December) to get in touch.

Leukaemia Busters : LB Golf Cup

Leukaemia Busters is a small medical research charity, looking into new, safer and more effective ways in which to tackle leukaemia. We are working towards a “magic bullet treatment” that works in conjunction with the patients own antibodies. This treatment will target only the leukaemia cells, meaning the patient will not feel the side effects so often associated with today’s treatments.

On 17th October 2008, Leukaemia Busters will be hosting their first ever annual golf event, the LB Cup. This will be held at the Marriott Meon Valley Golf Club, Shedfield, Southampton.
