Build a volunteer fundraising group

You don't have to go it alone, getting a team of volunteers together may be surprisingly easy

Created: 22 May 2008

Volunteering England gives a wealth of advice on recruiting volunteers, and you may find the following pages on their website helpful:

Third Sector online magazine also carries a number of news articles about volunteer recruitment, like this on on recruiting student volunteers (you will need to register with them to read the full article, but registration is free).

Volunteering agencies

There are a range of agencies specifically established to help volunteers find you and you to find volunteers (the text below is taken from their own websites):

Volunteer Centres

Volunteer Centres (sometimes known as volunteer bureaux or volunteer development agencies) provide support at a local level for individual volunteers and volunteer involving organisations.

Timebank

TimeBank is a national charity inspiring and connecting people to share and give time. TimeBank appeals to people like you who know that their time and skills are in demand - but just don't know what to do about it or where to start.

Do-it.org.uk

do-it.org.uk was launched in 2001 with the first, and still the only, national database of volunteering opportunities in the UK.

do-it.org.uk is part of the registered charity YouthNet, a non-profit-making organisation. We do not charge people to use the database as we believe that volunteering should be free to the user and so make a small charge to organisations registering their opportunities to ensure this.

IT4communities.com

We are the UK's leading national IT volunteering programme. Our main areas of activity are:

  • Helping charities and community/voluntary groups to find volunteers to help with their IT needs
  • Helping IT professionals to find suitable IT volunteering opportunities
  • Providing support for volunteering projects from project definition to project completion

Recruitment agencies

A number of recruitment agencies has specialist 'charity' departments, and some, like Charityjob will advertise volunteer opportunities free of charge. For a list of recruitment agencies see our directory of suppliers.

If your organisation has useful advice on recruiting and building volunteer groups and you would like to feature on this site, please contact us.
