Easy to follow advice
Food at events often brings in lots of fundraising income, so we really encourage you to give it a go. A great source of advice on handling food is the Food Link website, which describes itself as follows:
"The foodlink programme has been running for over 15 years and is designed to raise awareness, amongst consumers of all ages, about the simple steps that they can take to keep their food safe."
However the best site for specific information is probably the Eat Well site provided by the Food Standards Agency. If you can’t find the information you are looking for on the site they have a helpful email Q&A service. The most relevant page is probably the one covering events, but there is lots of other useful information on the site.
The legislation
All this information exists to help you keep food safe. There are two main pieces of legislation that cover the preparation and sale of food at fundraising events. We have given links to the legislation below, but recommend that you contact the Eat Well site if you have any questions, rather than be put off (or sent to sleep) by trying to read the legislation!
If you want some firsthand information the Food Standards Agency provide a helpful table that sets out what the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995 require you to do. As you will see much of it is just common sense.
