Football match: Introduction

Launch your fundraising into the premier league with our how2guide on fundraising football matches.

Created: 08 January 2008

Black and white footballThe Football Association proudly refers to its sport as "The Nation's Game", and with an estimate of around 37,500 football clubs currently on its register (including 9,000 youth clubs), 45,000 recognised pitches and around 12 million participants, it's easy to see why. Football is also widely acknowledged to be the UK's favourite spectator sport.

The huge following of "the beautiful game" and the celebrity status of many of its players makes it a popular target for fundraisers, both professional and voluntary, and many strong links already exist between teams, players and charitable organisations.

This guide is intended as a basic introduction to organising your own amateur (fun!) football match or tournament, with sponsored volunteer players from your workplace, school or college. If you're planning to fundraise for a larger charity or hoping to involve a league team or professional players in your activity, you should contact them for their input before you begin.
